Dementia e Alzheimer’s Disease and the assistance from the Care Giver in keeping daily Routines.

We are all aware that a diagnosis of Alzheimer or Dementia indicates a progressive disease accompanied by a series of changes in the people affected. The loss of independence and control over life's routines, as well as the loss of time awareness, becomes a reality. Aside from the oft-mentioned "lapses," problems with creativity, and problem-solving, there are also deviations from standard routines.

Often, these patients jump from bed and prepare themselves in the night to perform an activity like daylight time routine. It is critical that whoever follows these people, normally a Care Giver, can assist them in maintaining a regular routine and understanding which activities can provide the most benefits, in appropriate time, and in accordance with elderly personal preferences. The Care Giver should include and consider activities that can help in establish a sense of time. For instance, keeping the mealtimes, watching a tv programme on a certain time of day, keeping hygiene habits the same hours as ever, or joining a regular Sunday family lunch!

The short memories are a daily struggle and affected people have a lot more difficulty in learning and engaging with new activities. In fact, there are activities and routines that can increase a person's happiness and improve their mood, while others can increase agitation, anxiety, and confusion. For example, it has been demonstrated that the benefits of seniors listening to their favorites old songs and music as those brought them joy. When people hear these songs, they usually feel happier and less agitated.
